Chairman
Metropolitan Transportation Authority

New York, NY 10017

Dear Chairman Walder:

Congratulations on your confirmation as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). I look forward to working with you on the many issues that affect New York State's 29th Senate District, New York City and the New York Metropolitan area that the MTA serves.

While there are a number of issues that I believe you and I will discuss in the coming months and years, I write to you today on a matter of immediate concern.

As you know, the development of the Western Rail Yard Section of the John D. Caemmerer West Side Yard, which is currently moving through New York Cityfs Uniform Land Use Review Procedure, is of utmost importance both to the future vitality of the City and to the MTAfs budget. I have several outstanding concerns about the proposal, with one in particular which I wish to bring to your attention. Please find enclosed a copy of my testimony before the New York City Planning Commission regarding the development. I have highlighted the pertinent section and hope that an amenable solution to this distressing problem may be found.

Should you or your staff have any questions or wish to discuss this matter, please contact me at my district office at (212) 633-8052. If I am not available, Seth Berliner, my legislative aide who has been working with me on this issue, may be of assistance.

Thank you for your consideration of my concerns, and, once again, I look forward to working with you to maintain and improve our public transportation.

Sincerely,

Thomas K. Duane
NYS Senator
