Hon. David Paterson
Governor
State of New York
Executive Chamber
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224

Dear Governor Paterson:

I wanted to thank you for your courageous executive directive requiring State agencies to recognize same-sex civil marriages performed in other jurisdictions. As you are well aware, this brings New York State one step closer to granting the right of civil marriage to its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens.

While your directive is indeed historic, it need not be. Granting the basic right of civil marriage to same-sex couples should be accepted in our society without question. LGBT families deserve and demand equal treatment under the law. No more, no less.

I look forward to working with you and my legislative colleagues to make same-sex civil marriage a reality in New York State.

Sincerely,

Thomas K. Duane
New York State Senate
29th District
